Despite the increasing violence and terrorism in the Middle East and beyond, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that reviving the Israeli-Palestinian diplomatic negotiations is critical to world peace.
An Israeli political leader criticized UN chief Ban Ki moon’s remarks at the UN General Assembly on Monday in which Ban called for world pressure on the Israelis and Palestinians to revive the peace process.
“We must also guard against the dangerous drift in the Middle East peace process. With settlements expanding and incitement and provocations on the rise, it is essential for Israelis and Palestinians to re-engage – and for the international community to pressure the parties to do so. The world can no longer wait for leaders to finally choose a path to peace,” Ban said.
Member of Knesset Avigdor Liberman, head of the Yisrael Beytenu political party and former foreign minister, sharply criticized Ban’s words, accusing him of fixating on Israel while disregarding the dangerous reality in the Middle East.
“As the Middle East is burning in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Libya and the many other places, the last thing that the international community should deal with is the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” Liberman stated.
“If someone has been insisting to deal with this and really wants to have a chance to bring about a settlement, make sure that Abu Mazen [aka Mahmoud Abbas] would resign from his post as head of the Palestinian Authority for the benefit of anyone that would be interested in a settlement with Israel, rather than dealing only with inciting and encouraging terrorism,” Liberman said.
