Was an Israeli Woman Captured by ISIS?

Did the Islamic State (ISIS) capture an Israeli woman fighting with the Kurds in Syria? This could be Israel’s worst nightmare.

Canadian-born Israeli Gill Rosenberg, who left Israel for Syria last month to join the Kurds against the Islamic State, has reportedly been captured by ISIS terrorists.

ISIS-affiliated internet sites are reporting that she had been captured while fighting in the Syrian town of Kobani, which has been the scene of massive battles between the Kurds and ISIS.

Israel’s Reshset Bet radio station has contacted the Kurdish underground, and they claim that the report is baseless and that Rosenberg wasn’t even in the area where she was allegedly abducted. ISIS itself has remained silent.

However, the Canadian Government and Israel’s Foreign Ministry are taking the reports seriously and have launched an investigation into the matter.

“The Government of Canada is aware of reports that a Canadian citizen was kidnapped in Syria. Canada is pursuing all appropriate channels to seek further information and officials are in close contact with local authorities,” a Canadian foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement on Sunday.

Rosenberg’s Fight Against Muslim Terrorists

Rosenberg, a 31-year-old trained civil aviation pilot, immigrated to Israel in 2006 and enlisted in an IDF search-and-rescue unit. She was arrested in 2009 and extradited to the United States, where she served time for her role in an international phone scam.

The first Western woman to join the Kurdish cause, Rosenberg recounted on Israeli radio how smugglers helped her cross from Iraq into Syria in order to join the Kurdish ranks. “They [the Kurds] are our brothers. They are good people. They love life, a lot like us, really,” Rosenberg said, explaining why she joined up after contacting the Kurds over the Internet.

Rosenberg updated her Facebook page as her journey progressed. When arriving at a Kurdish region of Syria she wrote, “In the IDF, we say אחרי – After Me. Let’s show ISIS what that means.” A friend wrote, “Take care of yourself, friend. You are one strong woman, and you’ll destroy the Islamic State.”

On her Facebook page, many of her friends expressed concern about the report of her capture. “Our thoughts and prayers are with you Gill Rosenberg. Hope you are safe and we’re waiting for your safe return. G*d bless,” one of her friends wrote.

Another person claimed that Rosenberg is safe.

“Gill is safe and she is not active on Facebook cause she has no internet access. Once she has internet access she will be updating her status. ISIS’s supporters launched a rumor on social media that she was captured in ‪Kobani which is not true, simply because Gill is at least 300 km. from Kobani. Furthermore Gill stated that she wouldn’t be active on Facebook in the coming days due to unavailability of internet access, go and read her former status and you will find out,” he wrote.
