Netanyahu Vows to Bolster Israel’s Naval Power as Maritime Threats Grow

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to make Israel one of the world’s leading powers in maritime warfare during a visit to the Israeli Navy base in Ashdod on Sunday.

Netanyahu toured the base alongside Defense Minister Israel Katz, and the two were briefed by senior Navy commanders on threats facing Israel in the maritime arena and the operations of forces in the southern sector.

The briefing covered the activities of the Navy’s security patrol squadron and landing craft unit, while Netanyahu and Katz also viewed defensive and offensive weapons used to counter maritime threats.

“We know that the maritime space has essentially become an international battlefield,” Netanyahu said.

The prime minister pointed to developments in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, warning that Israel’s enemies are also seeking to threaten Israeli waters in the Mediterranean, the country’s seaports and maritime traffic.

“Naturally, we will not let that happen,” he said.

Netanyahu said Navy officials had told him that additional equipment was needed to meet the growing threats.

“A sixth submarine has arrived in the country, and they want more; more vessels, and other means that I do not intend to detail here,” he said.

Netanyahu did not elaborate on the additional capabilities being sought but said Israel intends to significantly strengthen its ability to operate both above and below the water.

“In this field as well, both above and below the water, I intend for Israel to be one of the leading countries in the world in this type of warfare,” Netanyahu said.

“We will also protect the State of Israel from the sea.”
