While Broadway legend Leonard Bernstein delighted the world with his music for decades, many are unaware of his role in Israel’s War of Independence!

Recently deceased Broadway composer Leonard Bernstein traveled to Israel in 1948 during the height of the young state’s war for independence to play his part by bringing music to lift the morale of a population under siege.

Bernstein advertised a concert in the southern Israeli city of Be’er Sheva. Thousands of wounded and recovering troops attended the event along with thousands more from the civilian population.

Unbeknownst to the heroic musician, Egyptian reconnaissance planes were eyeing the city from above and reported thousands of troops massing in Be’er Sheva.

Watch to see how this concert became an act of musical subterfuge that helped bring victory to Israel!
