American and European Lawmakers Call for a United Jerusalem

As Israel marks 46 years since the reunification of Jerusalem during the Six Day War, American and European lawmakers recently met to call for a united Jerusalem as the recognized capital of Israel.

American and European lawmakers met with Israeli Knesset members in a rare joint meeting in order to express their support for a united Jerusalem in honor of the day that Jerusalem Day is commemorated in the EU Parliament. The event was sponsored by the Israel Allies Caucus Foundation (IIACF), an organization “dedicated to the purpose of promoting communication and information sharing between parliamentarians and legislators the world over who share a belief that the State of Israel has the right to exist in peace within secure borders.” The IIACF operates in the United States, Uruguay, Brazil, South Africa, Finland, England, Japan, the Philippines, South Korea, Canada, Malawi, among others.

Rep. Doug Lamborn, a Republican from Colorado who co-chairs the Congressional Israel Allies Caucus, stated that for “historical, biblical and moral reasons; we are committed to the unity of Jerusalem as Israel’s undivided capital. Our unflinching support is especially crucial at this critical hour of turbulence throughout the region.” He also said, “The United States must continue to stand by our close friend and democratic ally. As threats to Israel continue to grow, we must continue to support Israel’s right to defend itself.”

Hannu Takula, the chairman of the European Parliament’s Israel Allies Caucus, claims that Jerusalem Day is very important for him because he was the one who seven years ago arranged for Jerusalem Day, the celebration of the reunification of Jerusalem during the Six Day War, to be commemorated in the European Parliament. “It is fantastic to have this connection with our American and Israeli counterparts through the Israel Allies Foundation,” he told the European Jewish Press. “In the future, we will no doubt use modern means of communication more and more to celebrate Jerusalem as the undivided capital of the Jewish State of Israel.”

SIGN THE DECLARATION TO KEEP JERUSALEM UNITED

MK Rabbi Binyamin Elon, president of the Israel Allies Caucus Foundation, told the Jerusalem Post, “High-profile parliamentarians and congressmen in Washington, Europe and elsewhere around the world are celebrating together the historical date of the reunification of Jerusalem and at the same time they are trying to do their best to relocate their embassies to Jerusalem through legislation. This is big encouragement for Israel and shows how important the work of the Israel Allies Foundation is as it continues to unite politicians of faith on behalf of Israel.”

These European and American lawmakers understand fully that a united Jerusalem is critical for Israel’s security. Additionally, according to international law, all of Jerusalem belongs to the Jewish people. Historically speaking, Jews have been living in Jerusalem since antiquity and have the oldest connection to the city, a fact backed up by archaeological evidence and the numerous Jewish sacred sites throughout the holy city. Furthermore, Jewish poetry since ancient times has spoken about the importance of Jerusalem to the Jewish people, illustrating that out of all of the cities in the world, Jerusalem is considered the holiest in the Jewish religion.
