Founding Nirvana-member Dave Grohl recently brought music fans a serious dose of holiday joy with his 2022 edition of the popular “Hanukkah Sessions” concert series.
Grohl produced the performances with Jewish friend and music producer, Greg Kurstin. The duo have over a dozen Grammy awards between the two of them and began producing the “Hanukkah Sessions” as videos from Kurstin’s home amid the corona pandemic.
This year, Grohl and Kurstin staged a live version of the event, performing a secret concert for 250 people at the Largo in Los Angeles on December 5.
Past years’ installments featured one new song released online for each of the eight nights of Chanukah, and this year followed a similar format, with new clips from the hush-hush LA gig released each night of the holiday.
In the clip below, Grohl and Kurstin are joined by Jewish movie star Jack Black, who also serves as one-half of the musical-comedy duo Tenacious D. Black sings “The Spirit of Radio” by Rush, a group fronted by Jewish singer Geddy Lee, whose mother survived the Holocaust.
In addition to Black, the concert featured other Jewish celebrities and musicians, such as director Judd Apatow, pop star Pink, and alternative singer Beck.
On the eighth night of Chanukah, Grohl covered the song “I Love LA,” which was penned by the acclaimed Jewish songwriter Randy Newman.
Grohl shot to fame in the early 1990s as the drummer for alternative rock powerhouse Nirvana. After the 1994 suicide of that group’s front man, Kurt Cobain, Grohl stepped out from behind the kit to form the Foo Fighters, which has garnered 12 Grammy awards with it’s genre-defining power-pop sound.
