AKIM Israel is the Israeli national organization for people with intellectual disabilities and their families. Founded in 1951, AKIM Israel acts to realize rights, promote a better quality of life, and improve the well-being of people with intellectual disabilities and their families, using legal defense through parental leadership and self-defense in 65 branches in all the country.

Currently, the organization represents some 35,000 people with intellectual disabilities and approximately 140,000 family members and legal guardians. AKIM Israel pursues the approach of “inclusion” of people with intellectual disabilities in their communities in all aspects of life: community life, training programs, free market work, military service, etc. AKIM believes that an inclusive society is a strong society.

AKIM integrates people with intellectual disabilities into society by including them in various projects that prepare them for new phases in life.

One of its flagship projects is “Equals in Uniform,” which allows people with intellectual disabilities to serve in the IDF – the Israeli army, taking into account that in Israel, compulsory military service is a phase that every young person goes through. In this way, people with disabilities go through the same path that all other young people age. They are later accepted as equals, and employers see them as capable of working (depending on their abilities).

AKIM also offers young people with intellectual disabilities the option of working in restaurants and food factories,  which prepares them for work in future jobs in various sectors throughout society.

Chef Ezra Kedem is one of the most famous chefs in Israel. He also participated in the Israeli version of the “Hell’s Kitchen” series. He generously offered to provide this workshop to help AKIM raise funds, so it can provide more young people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to earn a living and contribute to society.

Niv Avishay also participated in this workshop, a young man with intellectual disabilities who today serves as a cook in one of the elite units of the IDF. His dream after finishing the army is to study music with the Musequality project at Bar Ilan University. Help us to help them. Join us in our workshops.
