Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu traveled to Athens, Greece on Thursday for a meeting with its new Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades.
“We have established an alliance in the eastern Mediterranean, an alliance that is of great importance both for the energy future of the State of Israel and its becoming an energy power, and for regional stability,” Netanyahu stated.
Israel, Greece and Cyprus are set to sign a joint agreement that will lay the groundwork for a gas pipeline that connects Israel and Cyprus’s offshore fields with Greece and Italy. The plan will bypass Turkey, which has strained relations with the Jewish country.
Called EastMed pipeline project, it “will effect a revolution in Israel’s energy picture,” according to the statement. “We will not only bring about the lowering of gas prices and, later, of electricity prices but this will also direct hundreds of billions into state coffers to benefit Israel’s citizens including the elderly and children, health and social services.”
It is estimated that the project will provide 10 percent of Europe’s natural gas.
Over the past decade, Israel, Greece and Cyprus have developed close economic and security cooperatives. The gas pipeline has helped deepen these ties.
