Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein and other Members of Knesset arrived at an IDF base in the center of Israel on Thursday to help the Migdal Ohr non-profit organization with its annual food drive, in which tens of thousands of food packages are distributed to needy families throughout the country ahead of Passover so they can enjoy proper holiday meals.
Edelstein was joined by Knesset employees and by Minister of Construction and Housing MK Yoav Gallant, MK Ayelet Nahmias-Verbin, MK Penina Tamanu-Shata, MK Nurit Koren and MK Nissan Slomiansky.
”I call on each and every Israeli citizen to go through this special experience, and I am certain that those who are volunteering here today will sit at the Seder table with bigger smiles on their faces.”
Israel Prize laureate Rabbi Yitzhak Dovid Grossman, founder and president of Migdal Ohr, said ”every year I am exciting to see the spirit of volunteerism, giving and love within Israeli society, which helps out so that we will are able to provide food packages to those people who need them so much.”
“It is moving to see the Knesset employees help pack the food baskets so that we will be able to reach more families and children who have nothing to eat during the holiday. This is an example of the unmatched spirit of giving within Israeli society,” he underscored.
Migdal Ohr holds bi-annual country-wide food package distributions drives, entitled Chag Saveah. This endeavor was launched in 2004 by the children and alumni of Migdal Ohr who saw firsthand how poverty was affecting their country.
This important campaign initially began with the distribution of 500 food packages for needy families at Passover. In the past 10 years, thanks to many generous corporate partners and individual donors, it has grown into a national enterprise, offering sustenance to over 25,000 adults and their children in Israel during the Passover and Rosh Hashanah holidays.
