Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas slammed Israel at the UN on several accounts, while Ambassador Danon dismissed his words as those of “a serial evader of peace.”
Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Danny Danon on Wednesday reacted critically to the address by Palestinian Authority (PA) head Mahmoud Abbas at the United Nations General Assembly, who described Israel as an apartheid regime and deplored the creation of the Jewish state.
In an angry speech, Abbas denounced the 1917 Balfour Declaration, in which Britain announced its support for “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people,” as a “crime against our people.”
He repeatedly accused Israel of violating international law and abandoning the two-state solution.
Abbas fictionalized history by claiming that the “state of Palestine” in 1917 was a “prosperous, progressive” country, and that the Balfour Declaration and the British Mandate amounted to a “historical injustice.”
The Land of Israel was in fact a backwater Ottoman province, underdeveloped and with a small population.
Abbas called to boycott the Jewish state, stating that the international community must end “all forms of direct and indirect support to the occupation” and demanding that Israel face a diplomatic situation “similar to the international community’s approach to the apartheid regime in South Africa.”
“Apartheid was abolished in South Africa, but it’s still alive in Palestine. How is this acceptable?” he declared.
Danon Blasts PA Incitement to Terror
Abbas claimed that the Palestinians had “exerted all efforts to make peace with our Israeli neighbors,” but that Israel has consistently rejected all initiatives. “Israel’s rejection of the two-state solution puts the entire region in jeopardy,” Abbas asserted.
“Mahmoud Abbas has spread falsehoods from the UN podium which encourage hate, instead of ending the education towards violence in the PA,” Danon stated after the speech.
“Today’s lies and excuses have proven once again that the Palestinian leadership is a serial evader of peace,” the ambassador asserted.
