2015 saw the lowest rate of IDF soldier deaths in a decade. For the most part, Israeli deterrence can be thanked for that.
The year 2015 saw the lowest rate of IDF soldiers’ deaths in a decade, with 36 soldiers losing their lives.
An IDF Manpower Directorate report released Sunday recorded six troops who were killed in action, seven lost their lives in car accidents, two died in other accidents and six who died of ailments while in uniform.
Regrettably, almost half of soldier death in 2015, 15, were attributed to suicide.
In a positive note, 2015 was the third year in a row in which no soldiers were killed in training accidents.
Israel was not involved in any major military conflicts over the course of 2015, which resulted in a low annual casualty rate. In contrast, 2014 saw Operation Protective Edge, during which 67 IDF soldiers were killed.
