Muslims clashed with Israeli police on the Jewish Temple Mount on Sunday during Israel’s celebration of Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day), a national commemoration of the reunification of Jerusalem.
Prior to the Six-Day War in 1967, Jordan controlled eastern portions of Jerusalem and prohibited Jews from visiting holy sites such as the Western Wall and the Temple Mount.
On Sunday, Palestinians hurled stones and chairs at Israeli forces in response to Jews visiting the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism.
Tensions run high on Jerusalem Day, which this year falls toward the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
Two days earlier, a Palestinian stabbed two Israelis in the Old City before Israeli forces neutralized the terrorist.
Israelis hold an annual march through the Old City on Jerusalem Day, and police remain on high alert.
