Following a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Lisbon this week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that progress is being made towards a U.S.-Israel defense treaty.

“The meeting with Pompeo was critical for Israeli security. We agreed to promote a defense pact,” Netanyahu told reporters in Lisbon on Thursday.

“We will do it with full cooperation with the IDF and security forces and ensure total freedom of action for the US and the IDF, he said,.”This is one of our important goals for the coming months and we decided to speed up the work on it.”

Netanyahu noted that such a pact would help Israel in case of a military confrontation with Iran.

The prime minister also said that he spoke with Pompeo about the annexation of the Jordan Valley. “It’s our full right to do it,” Netanyahu said.

However, Netanyahu admitted that both the pact and the annexation will be difficult to pursue because a new government has not yet been formed in Israel, and the U.S. is preparing for the 2020 presidential election.

This was the first time Netanyahu has met with Pompeo since the secretary of state announced that the U.S. no longer considers Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria illegal.
