Israel will not allow Iran to establish a military base in Syria, Netanyahu stated on Thursday. The IDF attacked an Iranian base near Damascus early Saturday morning.

Ahead of reports that the IDF attacked an Iranian military base in Syria early Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated that Israel will will never tolerate an Iranian presence on Israel’s border.

In a speech recorded Thursday for the annual Saban Forum in New York, the Israeli leader affirmed that his country will never allow “a regime hell-bent on the annihilation of the Jewish state to acquire nuclear weapons.”

Israel fired several air-to-surface missiles at a military post near the Syrian capital of Damascus Saturday morning.

Syria’s state-run news agency SANA reported that the strike caused material damage but no casualties. However, reports from several news sites later confirmed that several Iranian soldiers were killed or wounded.

Lebanon’s Al-Mustaqbal said that at least 12 Iranian fighters were killed.

The target was reportedly an Iranian military base that was under construction south of Damascus and just a short 50 km from the border with Israel.

Neither Israel nor Iran has confirmed reports on the attack. The IDF repeated that it does not comment on Arab media reports.
