The Palestinians used anti-Semitic themes to degrade UK Prime Minister May for supporting Israel and defending the Balfour Declaration.
The Palestinian Fatah party, headed by Palestinian Authority (PA) head Mahmoud Abbas, posted a cartoon on its official Facebook page depicting British Prime Minister Theresa May with a pig’s snout and carrying a Star of David.
The Palestinians are irate that May has defended the Balfour Declaration and expressed pride in Britain’s role in the creation of the Jewish state.
In May, a high-profile Balfour Apology Campaign launched a petition on the British Parliament website calling on the UK to “openly apologize to the Palestinian people for issuing the Balfour Declaration” ahead of its centenary in November. In an address to the Arab League in March, Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas demanded the United Kingdom apologize for granting the Balfour Declaration.
A statement from the government read, “The Balfour Declaration is an historic statement for which HMG (Her Majesty’s Government) does not intend to apologize. We are proud of our role in creating the State of Israel. The task now is to encourage moves towards peace.”
Last week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, together with May, senior officials and members of the Balfour family, attended an event celebrating 100 years since the writing of the Balfour Declaration, despite pressure from pro-Palestinian groups in Great Britain. Britain is “proud of the role that we played in the creation of the State of Israel, and we will certainly mark the centenary with pride,” May stated at the event.
“I believe it to be one of the most significant letters in history, a letter which gave birth to a most extraordinary country,” said May. “So when some people suggest that we should apologize for this letter, I say ‘absolutely not.’ …We are proud to stand here today…and declare our support for Israel.”
The Balfour Declaration of November 2, 1917, is a letter written by then-British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Baron Rothschild stating that “His Majesty’s government views with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.”
In 1922, the League of Nations adopted this position and made the British Mandate “responsible for putting into effect the declaration,” which led to the UN vote in 1947 and the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.
Fatah’s Friday’s post presenting May as a pig included a letter written by “the children of Palestine,” demanding that “British Prime Minister Theresa Mary May apologize to all of the Palestinians throughout the world,” Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) reported.
PM May the Jew?
PMW, which monitors Palestinian incitement, explained that drawing May as a pig holding the Star of David may be the PA’s way of saying that by defending the Balfour Declaration, and thereby expressing support for a Jewish state, May herself becomes like a Jew. Jews are often depicted as pigs or apes in Palestinian media.
The official PA daily Al-Hayat Al-Jadida printed a cartoon showing May drinking a glass of Palestinian blood with the text: “Theresa May celebrates our blood.”
Another Fatah cartoon showed ultra-Orthodox Jews carrying Israeli flags together with armed Israeli soldiers walking from “Europe” to “Palestine” through a tunnel formed by a rolled parchment marked with “the Balfour Declaration,” the number “100,” and the British flag. The group, including an Israeli soldier in a tank with the Israeli flag, exits the tunnel into “Palestine” and shoots at fleeing Arabs, among whom several are seen lying dead in pools of blood.
PMW has documented numerous anti-Israel and anti-British statements by Palestinian leaders on the occasion of the centenary of the Balfour Declaration, such as the “ominous promise” being “the greatest crime in the history of mankind.”
