Tens of thousands of Nazi war crimes suspects may have continued receiving disability pensions despite a law passed nearly two decades ago ordering them revoked, according to an official review quietly published Tuesday.
German prosecutors say they are dropping their investigation of Wilhelm Kusterer, a former SS officer suspected of war crimes in Italy, since they claim he is unfit to stand for trial.
Reinhold Hanning, a 94-year-old former SS sergeant was found guilty Friday of 170,000 counts of accessory to murder and sentenced to five years in prison for serving as an Auschwitz guard.
