The plot was discovered through the efforts of Israel’s Shabak intelligence agency and Israeli police.

Last month, Shabak and Jerusalem police officers interrogated one Omar Abedin, 21, a resident of eastern Jerusalem, over suspicions he was planning to carry out a terror attacks.

During the investigation, the officers discovered that Omar was a member of the Hamas terror group and had taken part in Hamas activities as part of the Hamas-affiliated student cell at Birzeit University, near the Palestinian Authority-controlled city of Ramallah.

It was also discovered that Abedin several months ago had begun communicating with a terror operative from Lebanon. The two communicated initially through Facebook, and later switched to communication through Telegram.

At a certain stage, Omar was asked to carry out a shooting or bombing attack, for which he would receive financial assistance from terror operatives in Judea and Samaria.

Abedin confessed that he agreed and planned to carry out a shooting attack on a bus carrying police officers in the area of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

The Jerusalem District Attorney is today expected to file an indictment against him.
