An ancient Hebrew inscription dug up in one of the hottest areas in the Middle East is providing insight as to whether the residents kept the Jewish Sabbatical year.

Israeli archaeologists recently dug up an ancient Hebrew inscription in Tel Rechov, once an important city in the Bet She’an Valley.

Archaeologists have been looking for answers about the population that lived there – whether the residents were mainly Jewish and if they kept the laws of Shmita, the Biblical commandment for the Land of Israel to lie fallow every seven years, a year of agricultural rest.

Watch and learn more about the people who lived in this particularly hot area and what the inscription can tell us about them.
