A suitcase carried by a family of Polish Holocaust survivors to America after WWII has now made its final destination to Israel with the next generation.
Rabbi Dr. Kenneth Brander, who will be taking over from Rabbi Shlomo Riskin as head of the Ohr Torah Stone yeshiva in Efrat, made Aliyah with his family this week.
He arrived Wednesday on a Nefesh b’Nefesh flight carrying 232 newcomers to Israel from North America.
Brander’s father and his family were given the suitcase by American soldiers in a German DP camp 70 years ago.
In fact, Efrat, located in the Gush Etzion region of Judea and Samaria, seems like the perfect destination. Riskin, founding rabbi of the Lincoln Square Synagogue in Manhattan, left his thriving career in New York in 1983 to pioneer the new settlement, which is now a desirable city with a population of 10,000.
