New recipients of food baskets who recently fell under the poverty line speak about life in Israel during Corona.
With 1,000,000 Israelis unemployed due to the coronavirus pandemic, the number of people living below the poverty line has skyrocketed. Many people are unable to feed their families on the unemployment stipend they receive from the government.
Yad Ezra V’Shulamit has taken on the task of feeding Israel’s poor by upping their food distribution to 6,000 food baskets a week. “We are trying to keep everyone fed,” said founder Aryeh Lurie. “We receive hundreds of requests for food baskets – even from people who used to be donors. The virus has caused havoc in Israel for the poor and the new poor.”
Donors have agreed to double all donations given between now and December 31.
