What does Jerusalem mean to Israel and the Jewish people? Despite the fact that the US – along with most other countries – does not recognize it, Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.

In October 1995, US Congress passed the Jerusalem Embassy Act, which called for moving the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The purpose was to get the US to recognize the status of Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel and to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Israelis are still waiting for this to happen as every US president since then has vetoed the move.

The Holy City of Jerusalem is an integral part of Judaism. Religious Jews pray for Jerusalem three times daily. Jerusalem is mentioned over 600 times in the Torah. It is a focus at every Jewish wedding and on the night of Passover as well as many other times during the year.
