“We can remove the plague,” intones Boris Johnson in his Rosh Hashana greeting, quoting words from Jewish liturgy.

As Jews around the world gathered to celebrate the New Year holiday, the realities of a coronavirus Rosh Hashana sunk in, with large family gatherings ruled out and communal prayers scaled down to a bare minimum.

“I know Rosh Hashanah will be difficult this year without the close embrace of family, but I also know the Jews of Britain will respond with the same vigour and ingenuity they have displayed throughout this crisis,” says Boris Johnson in this greeting.

Johnson also thanks the community for coming together to battle the deadly virus.
