Ahead of the holiday of Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year for Jews, Jewish Educational Media (JEM) released an old clip of the late Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, in which he explains some of the proper ways to prepare for Yom Kippur.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe is considered one of the most prominent Jewish spiritual leaders of the modern era.

In the video, the Rebbe says it is proper to greet other Jews by saying, “May you be inscribed for a good year.”

“It is also proper to begin with the Jewish custom during the days before Yom Kippur to give everyone a piece of sweet cake. The idea is that if, G-d forbid, there is someone whom G-d Almighty willed upon him to receive help from a human being, he’ll fulfill this decree by receiving this sweet cake, and he won’t have any need to seek help from another human being – only from G-d Almighty Himself.”

“It is also a lesson for every wealthy man: When someone comes to him for help, he must take this as an example and immediately help him and consider it an honor that he is ‘replacing’ G-d Almighty as his emissary to help someone. And being that this is an honor for the giver, then he is probably receiving more from the receiver then he is giving him in monetary value.”
