Why is it that only Palestinians get their own special United Nations agency that allows them to pass on “refugee” status to their children and grandchildren?
The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) was set up in 1949 to provide humanitarian aid after the 1948 War of Independence. UNRWA was initially intended to be a temporary agency, but it has continued to provide support for Palestinians for the better part of six decades.
Palestinians are the only “refugee” group whose support is not handled by the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), even though number of Palestinians served by UNRWA is a fraction of the 16 million refugees for which UNHCR is responsible.
This brilliant video explains why the organization continues to exist close to 70 years after its creation.
