United with Israel, the world’s largest grassroots, pro-Israel community, began 2018 with an outstanding accomplishment – reaching 5 million followers on its main Facebook page. Former Spanish Prime Minister José María Aznar became the five-millionth member, while Jimmy Morales, president of Guatemala, was among other pro-Israel world leaders and dignitaries who have followed suit.

The new year seems to be moving in the right direction, as UWI’s Jerusalem Declaration, a global statement in support of a united Jerusalem as the eternal, undivided capital of Israel, has now been signed by 700,000 people from around the world.

Timing Was Perfect

Indeed, with US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and with all the attention on this issue in recent weeks, the timing for UWI’s historic initiative could not have been better.

Last spring, just in time for the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the Old City of Jerusalem and the reunification of the Israeli capital, UWI published the Jerusalem Declaration – which had 500,000 signatures from 168 countries around the world – in a thick, 1124-page hardcover book along with an introduction and the hundreds of thousands of names and nationalities of the signatories.

A UWI delegation, headed by the organization’s founder and director, Michael Gerbitz, presented the book to Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, who was visibly moved.

Netanyahu: The People of Israel Appreciate UWI

“It was most gratifying to see this tangible expression of the unwavering support of more than half a million of our friends from 168 countries around the world,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, upon receiving his own copy of the book, stated in a letter addressed to Gerbitz.

“The people of Israel appreciate United with Israel’s advocacy, educational efforts and unflinching defense of the truth,” Netanyahu said.

During the summer, UWI presented Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein and Education Minister Naftali Bennett each with a copy, although the number of signatories to the Declaration had already increased significantly.

Upon hearing that UWI garnered support from every corner of the world, including Arab and Muslim nations, Edelstein quipped, “I wish we could do that at the United Nations.”

“Jerusalem is not only our history, but our destiny,” Bennett declared.

This month, the number of people from around the world who signed the Jerusalem Declaration reached 700,000.

We’re aiming for a million and it’s very realistic,” Gerbitz stated.
