Rashida Tlaib

When a 7-year-old Arab tragically died last week, Tlaib spread a classic anti-Semitic blood libel falsely blaming ‘Israeli settler’ Jews for the boy’s death.

Enough is enough.

Congress must officially censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), who disseminated vicious anti-Semitic and anti-Israel lies.

Tlaib retweeted the claim that Jewish “Israeli settlers” killed a 7-year-old Arab boy, when in reality the child died tragically due to accidental drowning after heavy rains.

When Tlaib got caught, she deleted the tweet, but did not say she was sorry, even after she posted a non-apologetic follow up post.

In  a Jan. 28 tweet, Tlaib wrote: “In this era of inaccurate and manipulative news, I will also strive to hold myself to the highest standards for what I share. Know that I always seek truth as we uplift the oppressed and fight for equality, justice, and freedom.”

Tlaib, who has over 898,000 Twitter followers, never apologized for spreading the “blood libel,” a common anti-Semitic canard that dates back to the ancient Greeks, but was popularized in medieval Europe.

Modern-Day Blood Libels

Blood libels remain standard fare among rabid Jew-haters in modern times.

Tlaib didn’t get around to backing away from her tweet until Tuesday, although the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) had already condemned her tweet on Sunday.

“This is an example of how the blood libel works in 2020. @Rashida Tlaib retweets a vicious lie steeped in centuries-old accusations used to demonize Jews, then says nothing when it’s disproven. An apology is overdue,” said Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL CEO.

There must be consequences.

The proper response when a member of the U.S. Congress spreads vicious anti-Semitic propaganda is removal from office or a process called “censure,” whereby the lawmaker is publicly reprimanded and a resolution condemning their actions is read before their colleagues. Censure also strips lawmakers of any positions they hols as committee chairs.
