Urge Trump to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem! The time has come to rectify this historical injustice!

President Donald Trump has just concluded a brief trip to Israel, during which he reaffirmed the strong bonds between the Jewish state and the US.

While his warm gestures and words were appreciated in Israel, an item of business remains unfinished.

Trump has yet to declare that he will move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Israel’s eternal capital.

While Trump, on the presidential election campaign trail, repeatedly stated his intention to move the embassy, as time passes, Israelis are wondering if it will actually happen.

All US presidents since 1995 have availed themselves of a provision in the law, allowing the move to be delayed by signing a waiver affirming that in his judgment, it would harm America’s national security interests. The waiver must be signed every six months, and if Trump continues in the path of his predecessors, it must be done at the beginning of June, leaving little time left.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated last week that moving the US embassy to Jerusalem would advance peace between Israel and the Palestinians, rather than harming the process.

“Israel’s position has been stated many times to the American administration and to the world: Moving the American embassy to Jerusalem would not harm the peace process,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement. “On the contrary, it would advance it by correcting an historical injustice and by shattering the Palestinian fantasy that Jerusalem is not the capital of Israel.”

On the Thursday before his inauguration, Trump told the Israel Hayom daily that he was not a person who breaks promises, including this particular commitment.

“Of course I remember what I said about Jerusalem,” Trump said at the time. “You know that I am not a person who breaks promises.”

“I’d love to see that happen. We’re looking at it very, very strongly,” Trump reiterated during his meeting with Netanyahu in Washington in February.

We must hold Trump to his word and urge him to fulfill his vow to move the embassy to the Israeli capital, especially as the 50th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem is being celebrated.

It is time to correct an historical wrong! It is time to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem!
