Iran’s intelligence ministry claimed that Sunni terrorist groups had plotted imminent bombings in different parts of the country, including Tehran and a number of provinces, during the religious ceremonies during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan. This is rather ironic since Iran is recognized as the leading state sponsor of global terrorism.
The ministry ensured that all these have been foiled by the country’s security and intelligence officials.
Iran’s security forces claim they thwarted a terror attack of historic proportions in the Islamic Republic, blaming Sunni Muslims for the bomb plot.
The Iranian intelligence ministry announced on Monday that the country’s security forces prevented several suicide and terrorist attacks in different provinces, including its capital, Tehran.
“One of the biggest terrorist plots of Takfiri Wahhabi [Saudi-linked Sunni] groups was thwarted” in recent days, the intelligence ministry said in a statement, according to Iran’s Fars news agency.
Iranian media often uses the derogatory term Takfiri, heretics, to describe the Islamic State (ISIS) terror organization.
The statement added that the Sunni terrorist groups had plotted imminent bombings in different parts of the country, including Tehran and a number of provinces, during the religious ceremonies in the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.
The ministry ensured that all these have been foiled by the country’s security and intelligence officials.
“The terrorists have been apprehended and a number of armed bombs and a large amount of explosive materials has been discovered and seized from them,” it said.
Given the continued field investigations in and outside the country and interrogation of terrorists that is currently underway, more information will be released in future, the statement added.
Iran, which adheres primarily to Shia Islam, has been waging a prolonged battle against Sunni Muslims, led chiefly by Saudi Arabia. The two opposing powers have been waging proxy wars throughout the Middle East, and primarily in Yemen and Syria.
If the report is proven to be true, it would be an ironic development, as Iran is the leading state sponsor of international terrorism and maintains a global network of terror cells.
