Iran Nuclear Deal

Tehran has a completely different take on what was agreed upon with the P5+1 regarding its nuclear aspirations, according to an Iranian fact sheet.

While a framework nuclear agreement was announced two weeks ago in Lausanne, Switzerland, by Iran and the P5+1 powers, headed by the US, both sides have since made statements indicating that many obstacles remain. In many cases, the statements were outright contradictory.

The White House published a fact list delineating the details of the agreement. Tehran, however, claimed that the fact sheet was fallacious and published its own version of the agreement, which completely contradicted the US account.

The Iranian parliament’s Nuclear Committee released on Wednesday its own fact sheet, declaring that clarification must be made to the statement that was issued by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and EU foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini at the conclusion of the talks in Switzerland, Iran’s Fars News reports.

The fact sheet, which was presented by Ebrahim Karkhaneyee, head of the Nuclear Committee, stresses the necessity for “respecting the redlines and guidelines” specified by Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, making Iran’s decisions and undertakings reversible in order to enable Tehran to resume its nuclear operations in case of P5+1 non-commitment to its undertakings.

The document also calls for the immediate termination of all sanctions in a single step on the first day of the implementation of the final agreement, and not in phases, as the US had declared.

It includes an Iranian demand for 190,000 SWUs (Separative Work Units) of nuclear enrichment capability needed by Iran to produce fuel for the Bushehr nuclear power plant; continued Research and Development and scientific and technological progress in Iran, and immediate application of R&D findings in the country’s industrial-scale uranium-enrichment cycle.

The fact sheet discusses the operation of 10,000 centrifuge machines at Natanz and Fordo, as opposed to the 6,000 to which the White House had conceded; a maximum of five years for the duration for the deal, as opposed to a 10-year deal reportedly agreed upon, and the replacement of the current centrifuges with the latest generation of centrifuge machines at the end of the five-year period, to which the West is likewise opposed.

The US fact sheet that was released only a few hours after the announcement of the framework agreement caused fury in Iran, encouraging many to say they had serious doubts about US accountability and trustworthiness, Fars News reports.

Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act

The US Congress must ensure that sanctions against Iran remain in force until the nuclear threat is completely eliminated.

I strongly oppose easing sanctions before the nuclear threat from Iran has been eliminated. Allowing Iran to enrich uranium without being subject to 'anytime, anywhere' inspections is extremely dangerous and unacceptable. Iran's nuclear program must be stopped.
