Following a warning from the FBI, US security forces remain vigilant as they fear an ISIS terror attack on American soil.
Are Islamic State (IS or ISIS) terrorists targeting major bridges in America?
AP reports that the FBI has issued a warning on Monday asking law officers assigned to areas around the Mississippi River bridges in Memphis, Tennessee, to keep an eye an open for any security threats.
AP quotes FBI spokesman Christopher M. Allen as saying on Tuesday that the threat was “unsubstantiated.”
Special Agent D.O. Little added” “It was just an anonymous threat with no actual intelligence of an attack.”
The FBI advisory cited a threat to the “Memphis-Arkansas” bridge from an ISIS cell in Memphis. The FBI did not specify the source or nature of the threat.
Both bridges, which stretch across the river, serve some 40,000 commuters daily.
“We’re not on any heightened alert,” Rick Fahr, spokesman for the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management, told AP.
“This is no different than it is in the event of an earthquake or an ice storm,” added Danny Straessle, a spokesman for the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department.
ISIS – A Looming Menace in the US
US security officials nonetheless remain vigilant as they fear ISIS has reached American soil, and they are taking preventative action.
The FBI issued the strongest warning to date at the beginning of December about potential attacks by ISIS terrorists against the military inside the US.
The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a joint intelligence bulletin strongly urging those who serve in uniform to scrub their social media accounts of evidence of their service in the US armed forces. Officials fear such content could draw the attention of “violent extremists” who are seeking to target American men and women in uniform.
Security officials further expressed fears that the October 2014 attack in Canada, in which a terrorist fatally shot a soldier standing guard at the National War Memorial in Ottawa before attacking the Canadian Parliament building, could serve as a model for future ISIS attacks in the US.
In late September, ISIS spokesman Abu Mohammad al-Adnani called on Muslims in the US and Europe to attack members of the military: “Do not ask for anyone’s advice and do not seek anyone’s verdict. Kill the disbeliever whether he is civilian or military, for they have the same ruling. Both of them are disbelievers. Both of them are considered to be waging war.”
