A Swedish politician belonging to a group fighting anti-Semitism claimed that Israel had created the Islamic State terror organization to combat the Muslim world.
Adrian Kaba, a local politician from Malmo and a member of the ruling Social-Democratic party, claimed on his Facebook page that Israel created the Islamic State (IS or ISIS) terror group as a tool to combat the Muslim world.
The Swedish Sydsvenskan newspaper reported on Thursday that Kaba made the remark during a Facebook discussion this past summer. He wrote that “ISIS is being trained by the Israeli Mossad. Muslims are not waging war, they are being used as pawns by other peoples’ game.”
Kaba is also a member of a dialogue group against anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in Malmo.
‘I Now Realize that I Made a Mistake’
“Our confidence in Adrian Kaba has been radically changed,” Joshua Kaufman, a member of the Jewish community, told the Sydsvenskan. Kaufman said that he would leave the group if Kaba would not.
Reacting to the report, the chairman of the party’s regional branch, Joakim Sandell, said, “An elected official should not be spreading conspiracy theories.” Sandell said the party intends to deal with the issue internally but did not elaborate, JTA reports.
Kaba has since removed the post from his page. He first claimed he wanted to “bring new perspective to the debate,” but then apologized: “I now realize that I made a mistake. If there is evidence that this is an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory, I reject it without hesitation.”
However, Kaba has made anti-Semitic statements in the past. In 2012, he used the term “Jew-European extreme right-wing conspiracy” in an editorial. He apologized back then as well.
Malmo itself became infamous at the end of 2012 when it became the focus of anti-Semitic attacks in Sweden.
On Sunday, Israel condemned Sweden for their premature recognition of the so-called state of “Palestine.”
