The State of Israel mourned the killing of the victims of a shooting attack in New Jersey, which took place on Tuesday. Authorities believe a Jewish market was specifically targeted by the gunmen.
Six people, including a police officer and three bystanders, were killed in a furious gun battle Tuesday that filled the streets of Jersey City with the sound of heavy fire for hours, authorities said.
The dead included the two gunmen, Jersey City Police Chief Michael Kelly said.
“On behalf of the people of Israel, I extend my condolences of the families of Leah Mindel Ferencz, Moshe Hirsch Deutsch, police officer Joe Seals and the other victims of the murderous attack in Jersey City,” said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“Murdered was 24-year-old Moshe Hersh Deutsch. He was the son of Shulem (Abe) Deutsch…a leader in the Satmar [hasidic] community. Also murdered was Mrs. Leah Mindel Ferencz, 33. She was a mother of three and the wife of Rabbi Moishe Dovid Ferencz, the owner of the kosher supermarket,” reported COLlive.com, an Orthodox Jewish news outlet.
“Although there is no credible or specific threat directed against New York City, I have directed the NYPD to assume a state of high alert. Tonight, NYPD assets are being redeployed to protect key locations in the Jewish community. Tomorrow, we will announce additional measures,” tweeted New York Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday night.
“History teaches us how dangerous it is to ignore this kind of hateful pattern. We must stop anti-Semitism aggressively and decisively, and I call upon all New Yorkers to join in rooting out this threat,” said the mayor, adding that “this tragically confirms that a growing pattern of violent anti-Semitism has now turned into a crisis for our nation. And now this threat has reached the doorstep of New York City.”
“Jews have been attacked, beaten, & killed, simply because of our religion,” wrote Chaim Deutsch, a member of the New York City Council on his Twitter account.
