President tells Conference of Presidents that call to kill opposition was “ugly”; only the Iranian people can stop the regime in Tehran.
President Shimon Peres said that “it was an ugly appearance on television to see the [Iranian] parliament standing up and say ‘kill the opposition,'” in a speach to the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations on Wednesday.
Scolding Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadenijad, Peres said that “what the president of Iran [is doing] is a shame upon Iranian history and Iranian culture and the pain of their own people.”
He told the US Jewish leaders that he believes what is going on in Iran will continue.
However, he said, perhaps referring to international sanctions against Tehran or the economic incentives aid packages Egypt receives from the United States, “Iran will be stopped not by money but by their own people.”
Clashes between protesters and Iranian security forces in Tehran left two people dead and several wounded on Monday.
