The diligence of an IDF soldier prevented a terrorist with a pick-axe from crossing a checkpoint and harming or murdering at least one Israeli.

An Arab from Bethlehem was stopped in his tracks on Thursday morning while on his way to commit an act of terror.

The terrorist intended to attack soldiers at a major checkpoint in Gush Etzion known as the Tunnels Crossing. As he approached soldiers manning the post, they noticed something bulging underneath his shirt. After taking control of the terrorist, the soldiers discovered that he was carrying an axe.

The attacker, 29, was taken into custody and admitted during questioning that he had intended to harm an Israeli soldier.

Avi Biton, the district commander, praised the security forces for their diligence and decisive action.

“The soldiers’ alertness and preparedness together with their bravery prevented a sure terror attack. I am proud of the soldiers and their professional work,” he stated.

History of Terror

The Tunnels Crossing has been the scene of several terror attacks, including the site of a shooting attack which occurred during the first days of Operation Bring Back Our Boys, when the search was on for three kidnapped Israelis teens who were subsequently found murdered by Hamas terrorists.

Israel’s security forces have been successful in recent months in preventing several acts of terror, including two car-bomb attacks.
