This fascinating and little-known part of Israel’s history was a side note to the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States.

In the years after the creation of the State of Israel, relations between the USSR and Israel went downhill after the Soviet Union began supporting Arab countries in the region, in particular Egypt.

Following the Six-Day War, Israeli forces in the Sinai Peninsula soon spotted Soviet planes and missiles positioned along the Suez Canal. In response, the Israeli Air Force was deployed to stop them, resulting in a dogfight dubbed “Operation Rimon 20”.
