Israel remembered the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on Sunday with a memorial at the 9/11 Living Memorial in Jerusalem.

“September 11th, to quote former U.S. President Roosevelt is ‘a date which will live in infamy,’” said Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon, speaking at the event. “Even 10 years after the horrendous terror attack, we are still shaken to our core by the enormity of this heinous and cowardly act.”

Ayalon expressed sorrow for the loss of life, and noted that several Israelis were killed in the attacks. “Thousands of families in the United States and across the globe, including Israel, suffered losses for which there is no compensation or consolation,” he noted.

Terrorists attacked America because of the values of freedom and liberty which it espouses, he continued. Turning to the United States representatives present, he said,“Know that we are at your side as you defend the core values of our civilization.”

America is at Israel’s side as well, he continued, noting U.S. President Barack Obama’s intervention to save Israeli embassy workers earlier in the week. “These events served as just another example of the close relationship between our nations encompassing all levels.”

He concluded by praising the “quiet and determined courage” of Americans following the 9/11 attacks, and the heroism demonstrated by emergency personnel in particular. “Israelis recognized the greatness and exceptionalism of the American people in the images and stories from that day,” he said.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro noted that Israel has been a frequent target of terrorism as well. Israel can truly understand America’s pain, he said. Americans can learn from Israel how to continue everyday life despite the pain of terrorism and the fear of future attacks, he added.

America and Israel will continue to cooperate in the war on terrorism, he said, with the two countries’ shared values strengthening their connection.
