In a rare occurrence, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), which is known for usually singling out Israel for unfair condemnation, condemned the deadly Palestinian terror attack in Tel Aviv on Wednesday “in the strongest terms” and called for those responsible for “these reprehensible acts of terrorism” to be brought to justice.

A council statement approved Thursday by all 15 members expressed sympathy to the families of the four Israelis murdered and many injured in the attack by two Palestinians in Tel Aviv, and to the government of Israel.

Council members “reiterated that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable,” and “underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice.”

Israel’s Ambassador at the UN Danny Danon said the council statement was the first official condemnation of terrorism in Israel since the current wave of attacks began over eight months ago.

“The images of carnage resulting from Palestinian terror reached the members of the Security Council. This condemnation is an important, and moral, statement,” Danon said.  “We call on all the countries of the world to help end these attacks by strongly opposing the Palestinian incitement that directly leads to violent terrorism.”

The UNSC’s denunciation of the attack followed condemnation of Wednesday’s attack by a number of world leaders, including UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon who said that “there is no justification for terrorism nor for the glorification of those who commit such heinous acts.”
