Germany’s Social Democratic Party passed a resolution condemning the anti-Israel boycott movement as anti-Semitic.
Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) passed a resolution on Saturday in support of Israel, condemning the anti-Israel BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement as anti-Semitic.
The Jerusalem Post reported that the SPD’s 17,500-member organization unanimously declared at their convention that “they oppose the anti-Semitic BDS campaign” and “condemn sharply widespread anti-Zionist anti-Semitism.”
SPD Berlin said it “stands in solidarity with Israel, and the recognition of Israel’s right to exist and self-defense are for us non-negotiable.”
SPD Berlin’s youth organization, Jusos, introduced the resolution, promising to “fight against every form of anti-Semitism.”
The SPD members further committed themselves to stopping each and every form of cooperation with associations and supporters of the BDS campaign.
This is not the first time a German political party has declared its opposition to BDS over the campaign’s overt anti-Semitism. In December, German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party announced the passing of a resolution declaring BDS anti-Semitic.
“Who today under the flag of the BDS movement calls to boycott Israeli goods and services speaks the same language in which people were called to not buy from Jews. That is nothing other than coarse anti-Semitism,” said the CDU statement.
Additionally, the CDU compared BDS activists to the Nazis, who launched boycotts against Jews during the 1930s as a run-up to the Holocaust. BDS dresses up anti-Semitism in “new clothes of the 21st century,” the party said, referring to anti-Zionism.
The BDS movement promotes financial, academic and cultural boycotts against Israel, ostensibly as a nonviolent struggle against the so-called “Israeli occupation.”
Critics say its activities are a modern form of anti-Semitism and that its true objective is to destroy the State of Israel.
