Reports have indicated that new Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi is considering a plan to change aspects of the 1979 Egyptian peace treaty with Israel.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman was swift to respond: “There is not the slightest possibility that Israel will accept the modification of the peace treaty with Israel.  We will not accept any modification of the Camp David Accords.”

Tensions have been on the rise between Israel and Egypt over security in the Sinai Peninsula.  The area which has recently been used as a base for terrorists to launch against Israeli soldiers and civilians, is under Egyptian control according to the Camp David Accords.  Israel has been asking Egypt to act to stop this development and Egypt has responded by increasing military presence in the region.

According to the peace treaty, Egyptian military presence must be very limited in the Sinai and Israel has warned the Egyptian leadership to withdraw these new reinforcements once they have dealt with the problem.
