Israel arrested five people – three Palestinians and two Arab-Israelis – who were part of a terrorist cell planning attacks against the Jewish state and the murder of Israeli officials, Israel’s Security Agency revealed Wednesday.
The main assassination targets were Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir and former Knesset Member Yehudah Glick.
The terror suspects, recruited by Iran, were identified as Ziad Shanti, 45, and Hassan Mujarimah, 34, of Jenin, a hotbed of terror; Murad Kamamja, 47, from the Palestinian village of Kafr Dan; Hamad Hammadi, 23, of Nazareth; and Yosef Hamad, 18, of Muqeible in northern Israel.
Mujarimah and Kamamja, directed by a Jordanian resident, were tasked with smuggling weapons into Israel and collecting information on Ben-Gvir and Glick, the Security Agency said.
“I thank the members of the Shin Bet and the security forces who exposed and captured the terrorist squad planning to assassinate an Israeli minister. I will continue to act fearlessly and even more aggressively to fundamentally change the conditions of imprisonment terrorists; to continue the war on terror; to fight for the right of prayer and Jewish sovereignty on the Temple Mount – for the integrity of our country and to ensure the safety and security of the citizens of Israel,” Ben-Gvir stated.
Ben-Gvir, head of the Otzma Yehudit (Hebrew for ‘Jewish Strength’) party, has been advocating for tougher prison conditions for incarcerated terrorists.and for equal rights for Jews on the Temple Mount- Judaism’s holiest site and Islam’s third-holiest.
Glick, who advocates for equal rights for people of all faiths on the Temple Mount, miraculously survived an assassination attempt in 2014 after being shot and critically wounded by a terrorist.
According to the Shin Bet, the Israeli suspects, in a test run for a future terror attack, recently torched a car in Haifa and filmed the incident in order to prove their commitment to their Iranian leaders.
