It’s no secret that Israel’s vital tourist industry has taken a big hit since the outbreak of the Gaza war, and estimates suggest 80% of tourism is drying up.

Birthright has announced plans to bring approximately 6,500 young participants to the Jewish homeland through March 2025.

Spanning more than 300 international groups, the organization’s winter programming encompasses traditional 10-day trips alongside specialized internships and volunteering opportunities.

Visitors will make important stops at Tel Aviv’s “Hostage Square,” tours of Gaza border communities devastated by the Oct. 7 Hamas massacre, and hold meetings with Nova festival survivors and former hostages.

As the organization approaches its 25th anniversary with more than 850,000 alumni, its role in sustaining Israel’s tourism infrastructure during challenging periods has become increasingly apparent.

For every government dollar invested, Birthright generates a fourfold return through comprehensive spending on flights, accommodations, attractions, dining, and transportation services.

Since its founding in 1999 by philanthropists Charles Bronfman and Michael Steinhardt, the organization has generated approximately 8.5 billion shekels in tourism revenue, according to JNS.

“Since the war began, we’ve been inspired by the remarkable resilience and unwavering determination of our participants to come to Israel. While the war has presented challenges, it has only underscored the vital importance of our mission,” said Birthright CEO Gidi Mark.

Birthright has also recently resumed visits to northern Israel after a ceasefire with Hezbollah largely silenced the rockets that had rained down constantly after October 7.

With 10,000 volunteers on hand to assist, the organization has proudly adjusted its age eligibility criteria for first-time visitors to 50 years old.
