Do you enjoy Chardonnay? Nothing like a great tasting French wine, right? Well, it turns out that when you are drinking your Chardonnay, you are actually enjoying Israeli wine!
Tour guide Eve Harow told Israel National News that Dr. Shivi Drori, co-founder of the Gvaot Winery in Samaria, claims that this world famous wine originated in the Samaria region of Israel.
Joel Haber explains on his Fun Joel’s Israel blog that “When the Crusaders came to Israel, they wanted to bring a piece of the Holy Land back home with them, and knew of the famed grapes of Israel. So they brought some of them back to France and named them for the land itself.”
Harow reports that according to Israeli wine experts, the word Chardonnay actually comes from two Hebrew words meaning “gate of God.” This idea is strengthened by the reality that most French wines are named after the regions where the grapes grow such as Burgundy and Bordeaux but there is no region in France called Chardonnay.
Harow continued and explained that there is evidence that the grapes used in Chardonnay actually grow better in Israel than in France because they are indigenous to the land.
