Israel will host students and international experts – including 20 Nobel Prize laureates – to the largest-ever science event of its kind.
Israel is scheduled to host the world’s largest science conference this August.
The World Science Conference – Israel (WSCI) will allow some 400 college-aged students from 60 countries to meet with the world’s top scientists, including 20 Nobel Prize laureates. The event is an initiative of Nobel laureate Professor Roger Kornberg of the United States in cooperation with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; the Science, Technology and Space Ministry; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Prime Minister’s Office.
WSCI is modeled after the Asian Science Camp, which Israel hosted in 2012. That event attracted participants from numerous countries with contentious relations with Israel, including Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates. WSCI was originally planned for summer 2014 but was postponed due to the war in Gaza.
The five-day event features lectures from scores of world-renowned scientists in a variety of fields, including biology and medicine, chemistry, physics, mathematics and economics. It will also provide ample opportunity for interaction and collaboration, as participants are being housed together. Participating Israeli Nobel laureates include Professors Arieh Warshel (Chemistry, 2013), Dan Shechtman (Chemistry, 2011), Ada Yonath (Chemistry, 2009), Robert Aumann (Mathematics, 2005) and Aaron Ciechanover (Chemistry, 2004).
WSCI is being held in conjunction with the Nobel Conference for Science & Technology, which takes place August 17-18 in Tel Aviv. At that event, the Nobel laureates will discuss current developments and the future of science and technology together with representatives of industry, academia and government.
