With corona restrictions lifted, members of Israel’s “mermaid community” hit the beach to frolic in the surf.

By United with Israel Staff

Last week, Israeli mermaids emerged from coronavirus lockdown for a communal visit to the beachfront in Bat Yam, near Tel Aviv. The group was celebrating both the new bathing season and the end of stricter regulations designed to thwart the spread of the deadly virus.

For the past several years, this group has gathered with one another at beaches and swimming pools to don mermaid tails for group swims.

Among the group’s members are those who enjoyed films like Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” during their childhood and dreamed of swimming in the ocean as mythical sea creatures. The Israeli group spawned a Facebook page that has attracted around 1,000 members.

In addition to swimming together with faux mermaid tails during meet-ups at public pools and beaches, the group also promotes conservation of oceans and water resources.
