As strange as it may seem, there is a surprising link between individual and macroeconomic factors and the incidence of UFO sightings, Ynet reported.

Dr. Nathan Goldstein of the Economics Department at Bar-Ilan University and Dr. Ohad Raveh, head of the Department of Environmental Economics and Management at the Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food, and Environment at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, led the study.

The study’s results, published in a Humanities journal, found a link between unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), or UFO sightings, and macroeconomic conditions on the local, state, and national levels in the United States.

After considering weather conditions, the researchers found that UFO and UAP sightings were more common in the wealthier regions of the US.

“To our surprise, we found a strong positive correlation between economic attention and UFO sightings, even when considering factors like weather, mental health, and more,” Raveh told Ynet.

“In our study, we examined the relationship between the attention U.S. county residents pay to the skies (UFO sightings from 2000 to 2020) and the attention they give to economic factors, aiming to see if there’s overlap,” he added.

However, certain counter-cyclical trends were observed; in times of economic crisis, such as a recession and the COVID-19 crisis, UFO and UAP sightings were more common.

“Reports of unidentified aerial phenomena provide an indirect yet insightful measure of public interest in unusual events,” said Raveh.

“Our study reveals that these reports are closely tied to economic conditions, offering a way to track how attention to such phenomena fluctuates with changes in the economy. We found that wealthier areas tend to report more sightings, and that these reports increase during economic recessions in certain regions, indicating that public focus on unusual events intensifies during times of crisis,” he said.
