Former US Vice President Dick Cheney joins a long line of American leaders warning of the many perils of the P5+1 deal with Iran, including nuclear warfare.
Former US Vice President Dick Cheney expressed strong opposition to President Barack Obama’s foreign policies and, specifically, his nuclear deal with Iran, charging that the American leader’s decisions have diminished Washington’s positive global influence and will likely result in a dangerous war.
In an op-ed penned with his daughter Liz Cheney for the Wall Street Journal, they argue that the Iran nuclear deal with the P5+1 will make the outbreak of war more likely. The accord, they say, is “tragically reminiscent” of the 1938 Munich Agreement between Britain’s then-Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and Nazi Germany’s Chancellor Adolph Hitler, which led to the onset of World War II.
“The Obama agreement will lead to a nuclear-armed Iran, a nuclear-arms race in the Middle East and, more than likely, the first use of a nuclear weapon since Hiroshima and Nagasaki,” they state.
“The president has tried to sell this bad deal by claiming that there is no alternative, save war. In fact, this agreement makes war more, not less, likely,” they write. “In addition to accelerating the spread of nuclear weapons across the Middle East, it will provide the Iranians with hundreds of billions of dollars in sanctions relief, which even the Obama administration admits likely will be used to fund terror.”
“Nearly everything the president has told us about his Iranian agreement is false,” the Cheneys state. Obama “has said it will prevent the Iranians from acquiring nuclear weapons, but it will actually facilitate and legitimize an Iranian nuclear arsenal. He has said this deal will stop nuclear proliferation, but it will actually accelerate it, as nations across the Middle East work to acquire their own weapons in response to America’s unwillingness to stop the Iranian nuclear program.”
Looking to 2016 to Restore American Strength
The authors of the WSJ piece, addressing the members of Congress, who face a vote on the agreement next month, stress that “a vote for the Obama nuclear deal is not a vote for peace or security. It is a vote for an agreement that facilitates Tehran’s deadly objectives with potentially catastrophic consequences for the United States and our allies.” They call on Congress to reject the deal and to re-impose stronger sanctions.
Hoping to restore what they call “America’s exceptionalism” and global leadership, the Cheneys look to the 2016 elections, in which they hope “the right person in the Oval Office can restore America’s strength and alliances, defeat our enemies and keep us safe. It won’t be easy. There is a path forward, but there are difficult decisions to be made and very little time.”

Sign the Petition to Stop a Nuclear Iran
The US Congress must ensure that sanctions against Iran remain in force until the nuclear threat is completely eliminated.
I strongly oppose easing sanctions before the nuclear threat from Iran has been eliminated. Allowing Iran to enrich uranium without being subject to 'anytime, anywhere' inspections is extremely dangerous and unacceptable. Iran's nuclear program must be stopped.
