Vice President Mike Pence will serve as the guest of honor at an event celebrating 70 years since the UN vote that recommended the establishment of the Jewish state in the Land of Israel.
US Vice President Mike Pence will serve as the guest of honor and keynote speaker at a special celebration in November hosted by Israel’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations (UN), the Israeli mission announced Sunday.
The gathering will celebrate 70 years since the historic November 29, 1947 United Nations vote on UN General Assembly Resolution 181, which recommended the establishment of the Jewish state in the Land of Israel.
The celebration of the 1947 vote will take place in the structure which served as the UN headquarters from 1946 to 1950 and today houses New York’s Queens Museum.
Dignitaries from around the world, senior UN officials, ambassadors and leaders from the pro-Israel community will join Israel’s Mission to the UN at the event. During the celebration, the hall will be redesigned to appear in its original state from 1947.
“We are honored that Vice President Pence will join us when we celebrate seventy years since this momentous occasion,” Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon stated.
“From the moment President Truman became the first world leader to recognize the new Jewish state, Israel has had no better friend than the United States of America, and the US has had no more steadfast ally than the State of Israel,” Danon added.
Israel’s plans for the celebration were mired when the Queens Museum rescinded their agreement to host the event in August, caving in to the anti-Israel BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanction) movement.
Following Danon’s protests and public pressure, the Queens Museum reversed its decision to renege on its earlier agreement.
