Ex-Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters is feeling an economic pinch due to his vehement anti-Israel advocacy, the New York Post’s Page Six reported on Thursday.
According to the report, American Express declined to sponsor Waters’ 2017 “Us + Them” North American Tour due to his stance on Israel.
A source at the New York City-headquartered financial services firm told Page Six, “The company was asked to sponsor his tour for $4 million, but pulled out because it did not want to be part of his anti-Israel rhetoric.”
American Express did sponsor the Desert Trip music festival earlier this month at which Waters spoke out in support of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.
An American Express spokeswoman told Page Six, “We never committed to sponsoring Roger Waters’ upcoming tour. When we were approached with the options, we passed on making a bid.” The tour, Page Six reported, will instead be sponsored by Citigroup.
Earlier this year, it was reported that the 73-year-old Waters was dating Palestinian activist Rula Jebreal. In September, however, it was reported that the two had split up.
In recent years, Waters has criticized Israel’s West Bank security barrier, and became a vocal BDS proponent.
