Iranian Ground Force Commander Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan said that no agreement between his country and the P5+1 could erase Iran’s hatred towards the US.
With only a day left to the deadline for the nuclear talks, a senior Iranian general referred to the US as the “enemy” and said Iran would continue to regard it as such, notwithstanding the outcome of the negotiations.
Iranian Ground Force Commander Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan underlined that an agreement on the nuclear issue between Tehran and the six world powers would not erase the animosity between Iran and the US.
“The US might arrive at some agreements with us within the framework of the Group 5+1, but we should never hold a positive view over the enemy,” the Iranian Fars News agency quoted Pourdastan as saying in Tehran on Sunday. The “enemy” he is referring to is the United States.
“Our enmity with them is over the principles and is rooted because we are after the truth and nations’ freedom, but they seek exploiting nations and putting them in chains,” he declared.
Iranian and P5+1 negotiators are making last-ditch efforts in Vienna to arrive at a final nuclear deal. Reports emanating from the talks are bleak on the prospects of an agreement being reached before the deadline.
Iranian Foreign Minister and senior negotiator Mohammad Javad Zarif told reporters in Vienna on Friday that the P5+1 needs to adopt a realistic approach towards a final deal.
“As I have said many times before, the Western countries should make their political decision if they are looking for an agreement or continuing pressures,” he said. “We have heard them many times that they are looking for an agreement… .”
Zarif stressed that it would be impossible for the Western countries to strike a final deal with Iran while insisting on maintaining sanctions against Tehran.

The US Congress must ensure that sanctions against Iran remain in force until the nuclear threat is completely eliminated.
I strongly oppose easing sanctions before the nuclear threat from Iran has been eliminated. Allowing Iran to enrich uranium without being subject to 'anytime, anywhere' inspections is extremely dangerous and unacceptable. Iran's nuclear program must be stopped.
