Nadav and Avihu, the sons of Aaron the High Priest, were among the greatest Jews of their time. In fact, despite their sin, we are told they were otherwise righteous in every way.

There is a Midrash (rabbinic interpretation) that suggests a reason for their punishment of death, which is discussed in this week’s double Torah portion, Acharei Mot-Kedoshim.
